Introduction

In nothing is the doctrine of the survival of the fittest more aptly illustrated than in conundrums or riddles. It is almost impossible to lose or destroy a really good one. It comes down through the ages, surviving civilizations and monuments. It is revamped, changed and disguised by hundreds of would-be humorists, but at heart it is generally the same old conundrum or riddle. And old one is almost of necessity a good one.
